Clynelish Single Malt Scotch Whisky
2001, 25 Years Old
130 bottles
49.4% ABV
Refill Hogshead
Website Exclusive
Another brilliant 2001 Clynelish, beautifully aged in a tired refill Hogshead for 25 years – with plenty of headspace for slow oxidative ageing. This cask yielded 130 bottles only.
The label features a beautiful drawing of Dunrobin Castle by William Daniell from 1813, printed 6 years before the Clynelish distillery was founded. Dunrobin Castle is the seat of the Sutherland Clan and sits on the East Sutherland Coast between Golspie and Brora.
Nose: Bright, fruity, and welcoming. It opens with an abundance of stone and citrus fruits – soft apricots and zesty kumquats – alongside orchard pears stewed with a touch of fennel and caraway seed. There is a gentle sweetness here, like a light dusting of Demerara sugar, all sitting over a quiet background of charred oak.
Palate: The arrival is oily, sweet, and zesty. It leads with that very specific note of a tin of pineapple left open in the fridge for a week – sweet, slightly concentrated with a hint of old metal. This is quickly followed by warming oak spice and a mix of aromatic herbs: crisp red apple peelings, more caraway seed, and a pinch of ground dry ginger.
Finish: Good length with a soft, clean finish. The gentle baking spices and residual stewed fruits slowly fade, leaving a nice, lifting hint of spearmint right at the end.
