Our Last Cask of 1995 (Unpeated) Ledaig!
This is the final cask from our rare parcel of 1995 unpeated Ledaig – a whisky we’ve gradually released over the past few years. The parcel was highly unusual, as it was sold as “Ledaig,” yet the liquid was clearly unpeated.
The source was an ex-senior employee of the distillery who purchased the casks directly upon his retirement. We’ve explored several theories about why unpeated Ledaig exists – and whether it isn’t, in fact, just Tobermory!
The most convincing explanation we’ve come across is that it was produced using Ledaig cut points with unpeated malt, likely intended for internal blending purposes. Alternatively, perhaps a warehouseman simply stencilled the casks as “Ledaig” instead of “Tobermory.”
Nose: Sage, banana peel, Sauternes wine, and lemon curd. Notes of vanilla fudge and condensed milk mingle with grist and freshly dried hay. A gentle salinity emerges, along with the faintest touch of chalk.
Palate: Rich and rounded. Layers of stone fruits, white grapes, and aged Sauternes are complemented by vanilla fudge. It opens sweet and fruity before developing a drier, more mineral profile, with herbal notes of dried sage and rosemary.
Finish: Begins sweet, then turns drier with notes of hay and sea salt. Over time, beeswax comes to dominate
