Nose: Surprisingly poised and far less brutal than its high-proof pedigree would suggest. It opens with an intriguing mix of salted pistachios and pineapple roasted on a George Foreman grill, finished with a dusting of Demerara sugar and a lift of spearmint. More eccentric notes follow: tumble-dried capers and green apple blitzed in a Nutribullet, before the quintessential Laphroaig medicinal character begins to steadily expand.
Palate: The arrival is unexpectedly sweet, led by heavy cream infused with vanilla pods and a dusting of confectioner’s sugar, alongside crunchy almond brittle and nougat. This sweetness then pivots into a sharp, briny mid-palate of caperberries and preserved lemons. As the smoke builds, it brings a rugged Islay texture – driftwood beach bonfires, lobster creels, tarred ropes, and the oily, animalic tang of waxed sealskins and camphor.
Finish: Long and impeccably balanced. It lingers on a mineral sea salt note, accompanied by the clean sting of medicinal wipes and the rich, oily depth of roasted cashews.
